BBC - Business Trip: Denver

By Chris McGinnis

"Even the most notorious nose-to-the-grindstone business traveller will have a difficult time not having fun in sunny Denver, located on the eastern edge of the Colorado Rocky Mountains.

Its location near the geographic centre of the US, a world-class airport and a rash of recent hotel developments in its pedestrian-friendly core have combined to make Denver an increasingly regular stop on the business travel circuit. From 2010 to 2011, there was a 17% increase in business travellers coming to the city, and a hotel building boom will add some 1,400 new rooms over the next two to three years.

Also, the city’s diverse economy has weathered the recent economic storm better than most other major US cities. In April the Metro Denver Economic Development Corporation had to revise its forecast due to better-than-expected gains in employment, retail sales and applications for residential building permits."

Past WTC Intern, Alison Lowe, featured on Live Worldly Blog

Guest Blogger of the Month: Climate Change; Is it too late?

Our guest blogger this month is Alison Lowe, a student at the University of Denver’s Josef Korbel School of International Studies. Currently pursuing a masters in Global Finance, Trade and Economic Integration, she expects to graduate in June 2013. Let’s hear what Alison about this month’s global issues…

While you would be forgiven for not noticing (it’s hardly been topping the daily headlines), a two-week long meeting of most of the world’s nations is currently going on to avoid what some have termed the greatest threat facing the world as we know it. No, it’s not the U.S’ “fiscal cliff”. Surprisingly enough, it’s not even Rihanna’s decision to rekindle her relationship with ex-beau Chris Brown: it’s climate change.
"Foreign bribery probes spread as firms start ratting on each other" by Steve Le Vine

"If you are a technology executive exploring the world’s frontiers, now is not the time to bribe your way into a deal. The same goes for health-care and energy companies. These three industries are currently the prime targets of US foreign bribery investigators, who ensnare one company and then persuade it to inform on rivals or partners."

Member Company Coolerado featured in the Economist

Congratulations to member company, Coolerado, for their spotlight this week in the Economist:

"Thankfully for lovers of coolth, air conditioning is becoming more efficient. In the past 30 years, more stringent standards for air conditioners in developed countries have more than doubled the energy efficiency of new units. For decades, air conditioning has used the same compressor technology that runs refrigerators. But Coolerado, an American company, claims to have cut energy costs by 90%, using only water as a coolant: its devices feature specially designed plastic plates that chill by evaporation. They blast half the air, sodden and warm, back outside and send the rest, cool and dry, inside. The machines can even be solar powered (though their thirsty habits may not suit all hot places)."

"Panama FTA Enhances Opportunities For U.S. Beef" By Joe Schuele

"The U.S.-Panama Trade Agreement took effect Oct. 31, further enhancing market access for U.S. beef in Central America. The agreement grants immediate, duty-free access for high-quality (Choice and Prime) beef cuts. All other beef muscle cuts are subject to a 30% duty, but this rate will be phased down to zero over the next 15 years. For beef variety meat, Panama’s 15% duty fell to zero immediately for some items, while the duty rate for others will be phased down to zero over the next five years."

A $10 Trillion Bet on China and India- by Michael J. Silverstein

"Just yesterday, the Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development (OECD) released a new report predicting that the economy of China will rebound and grow 8.5% in 2013 and 8.9% in 2014, citing increasing domestic consumer demand and government spending on housing and infrastructure as the tailwinds behind this renewed surge. According to the Wall Street Journal, the OECD report attributed China's slightly less robust 7.5% growth rate this year to a slowdown in exports and the government's intervention to stave off inflation and rein in property prices. The OECD report also expressed optimism that India's economy will resume growth over the next two years, indicating that its currency will likely be shored up soon and that its current-account deficit issues will be stabilized, too."

What You Really Need to Know About International Business Strategy

Does your company have an International Business Strategy? Many companies do not have one, and those that do often let its relevance lapse or file it away for none to see. An effective international business strategy can translate to exponential company growth. But many companies leave untapped potential revenue, or worse yet, expose themselves to unnecessary business risks. This is a crash course on international business strategy that will hopefully lead to the next level of planning.
