"Even the most notorious nose-to-the-grindstone business traveller will have a difficult time not having fun in sunny Denver, located on the eastern edge of the Colorado Rocky Mountains.

Its location near the geographic centre of the US, a world-class airport and a rash of recent hotel developments in its pedestrian-friendly core have combined to make Denver an increasingly regular stop on the business travel circuit. From 2010 to 2011, there was a 17% increase in business travellers coming to the city, and a hotel building boom will add some 1,400 new rooms over the next two to three years.

Also, the city’s diverse economy has weathered the recent economic storm better than most other major US cities. In April the Metro Denver Economic Development Corporation had to revise its forecast due to better-than-expected gains in employment, retail sales and applications for residential building permits."

Two Colorado firms to be honored for increasing U.S. exports

"Two Colorado firms will be among more than 50 U.S. companies that will be honored next week for increasing American exports.

Geotech Environmental Equipment Inc. of Denver and Boulder's Lightning Eliminators & Consultants will receive the 2013 President's "E" Award.

Of the 57 recipients, 47 are small or medium-sized enterprises, 33 are manufacturers and 31 fall into both categories, according to the U.S. Department of Commerce."

Colorado companies honored by Commerce Dept. for export growth

"The U.S. Commerce Department will honor more than 50 companies and organizations, including four from Colorado, for their contributions to increasing U.S. exports.

Colorado companies receiving the “E” Award for Exports are Geotech Environmental Equipment Inc. of Denver and Lightning Eliminators & Consultants of Boulder.

Also, the World Trade Center-Denver and Frederick Export in Denver received the “E” Award for Export Service."

Zeigler Bros. named national Exporter of the Year

"Adams County-based Zeigler Brothers Inc., a manufacturer of animal feeds for aquaculture, biomedical industries, pets and zoos, has been named national “Exporter of the Year” by the U.S. Small Business Administration.

“Small business exporters like (Zeigler) are key engines of our economy and are playing a crucial role in job creation as we move toward an economy that is built to last,” SBA Deputy Administrator Marie Johns said in a statement.

Zeigler’s executives were presented the award at the World Trade Day Conference in Denver yesterday."

Avon's Liberty Skis wins Governor's Excellence in Exporting Award

"Avon-based Liberty Skis on Thursday won a 2013 Governor's Award for Excellence in Exporting from the Colorado Office of Economic Development and International Trade (OEDIT).

This award has been given since 1970 and honors Colorado companies that demonstrate a commitment to international trade.

Liberty Skis makes high performance skis rooted in functional innovation and respect for the environment, according to an OEDIT announcement on Thursday: "Every material they use and design is done with the ultimate goal of elevating customers' experience on skis in Colorado and around the globe."

While security efforts remain the department's “highest priority,” furloughed workers will cause back-ups at the nation's ports of entry for both people and merchandise, the department said in a letter to trade and travel industry associations. The cuts take place against a backdrop of “significant growth” in travel and trade, with international air travel growing 12 percent over the past three years and maritime and air cargo shipments growing by 4 percent over the past year."

Bill Allowing Export of Certain Colorado Satellites

President Barack Obama on Wednesday night signed into law the National Defense Authorization Act, which includes a key provision modernizing the satellite-export language championed by U.S. Sen. Michael Bennet on behalf of Colorado's aerospace industry.

In the past 30 years, more stringent standards for air conditioners in developed countries have more than doubled the energy efficiency of new units. For decades, air conditioning has used the same compressor technology that runs refrigerators. But Coolerado, an American company, claims to have cut energy costs by 90%, using only water as a coolant: its devices feature specially designed plastic plates that chill by evaporation. "Panama FTA Enhances Opportunities For U.S. Beef" By Joe Schuele

"The U.S.-Panama Trade Agreement took effect Oct. 31, further enhancing market access for U.S. beef in Central America. The agreement grants immediate, duty-free access for high-quality (Choice and Prime) beef cuts. All other beef muscle cuts are subject to a 30% duty, but this rate will be phased down to zero over the next 15 years. For beef variety meat, Panama’s 15% duty fell to zero immediately for some items, while the duty rate for others will be phased down to zero over the next five years."

"Just yesterday, the Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development (OECD) released a new report predicting that the economy of China will rebound and grow 8.5% in 2013 and 8.9% in 2014, citing increasing domestic consumer demand and government spending on housing and infrastructure as the tailwinds behind this renewed surge. According to the Wall Street Journal, the OECD report attributed China's slightly less robust 7.5% growth rate this year to a slowdown in exports and the government's intervention to stave off inflation and rein in property prices. The OECD report also expressed optimism that India's economy will resume growth over the next two years, indicating that its currency will likely be shored up soon and that its current-account deficit issues will be stabilized, too."
